If we rear salmon next year, we should give them all French names to celebrate our bilingual heritage.

And then they'll be little French fries :)

This might be an appropriate theme song for our little fry!

"A parody of 'I will Survive', this educational video takes an inside look into the lives of salmon - their dangerous journeys, emotional struggles , and ironically, their eventual deaths."

This is great news! I checked out the Ducks Unlimited Canada website to read more about the land acquisition and found out that:

"Canada is home to nearly 25 per cent of all the wetlands on Earth. While that may sound like a lot, the harsh reality is that Canada’s wetland habitats continue to vanish at an alarming rate. Up to 70 per cent of wetlands have disappeared in settled areas of Canada."

Good job, Richmond, DUC, and the Grauer family on conserving this wetland habitat!

Check out this review for Peter Johnson's "Voyages of Hope"--it even mentions the Cannery!

"This “creative non-fiction” (I’m not making this up, folks. That’s actually the genre designation on the book cover) gem first caught my eye and fancy in the gift shop at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery in the picturesque, and tourist friendly, fishing village of Steveston, British Colombia, Canada. I just had to bring it home.

I’m glad I did. Chapter Five, poetically entitled, ‘The Voyage from Hell: The Tynemouth’ is, by itself, easily worth the price of purchase. Sixty closely-chaperoned young ladies, ninety-nine days at sea, three separate mutinies en route resulting in paying, male, passengers being pressed into service to carry coal across the decks to keep the boilers stoked and the ship steaming forward, all makes for terrific reading. And I thought nine hours in the comfortable waiting room at the Vancouver Airport, trying for standby-seats home was a terrible inconvenience to my travel."

As a side note, Bruce Burrow's debut novel has achieved a number of stellar reviews:

"The River Killers is engaging and informative . . . it's impossible not to be fascinated by the mess of fishing and fish stewardship." —Times Colonist

"A very good first book. Danny [Swanson] seems destined to return, which makes Burrows a writer to watch." —The Globe and Mail

"A story that's bound to intrigue anyone who has made a living from fishing . . . The dialogue, filled with banter and smart-a**ed commentary, captures the rough-edged style of 1950s mystery novels." —The Fisherman

"Lovers of succinct dialogue a la Elmore Leonard and witty writing like Raymond Chandler's will be impressed by Burrows' style." —Western Mariner

I can't wait to read it!
